HISTORY OF BHAGAT SINGH’S MARTYRDOM DAY:
In December 1928, Bhagat Singh and his associate Shivaram Rajguru killed a 21-year-old police officer named John Saunders. Their primary goal, however, was to kill James Scott. They suspected Scott of being the primary perpetrator of Lala Lajpat Rai's death. Lajpat Rai was a notable freedom fighter who died as a result of injuries sustained when a British battalion reportedly led by Scott lathi-charged the demonstrators.

After eluding British authorities for several months, Bhagat Singh and another freedom fighter and revolutionary, Batukeshwar Dutt, appeared in the Legislative Assembly and caused explosions by detonating two bombs. The primary reason for the explosions, however, was to draw the attention of the British government rather than to hurt anyone. They shouted pro-freedom slogans in the assembly, showered leaflets with their manifesto, and then surrendered.

While imprisoned, Bhagat Singh joined educationist and freedom fighter Jatin Das' hunger strike movement, which demanded better prison conditions for Indian inmates. In September 1929, Jatin Das died of malnutrition in prison. Bhagat Singh was later tried and executed by hanging in March 1931.

Over the last few decades, Singh's fame has increased. He was a well-educated man, an atheist, and a supporter of class struggle. Martyrdom Day is held on March 23rd to honour Singh's contribution to India's freedom struggle. People also pay tributes to Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru, Bhagat Singh's two other colleagues who were hanged on the same day as Singh.
